Why is correct system sizing by REVO so important?
With the end of government incentive schemes, proper photovoltaic system sizing has become far more important than it was in the past. Under previous incentive programmes, the larger the system, the greater the financial return from the electricity produced. In addition, mechanisms such as net metering and self-consumption further increased the economic benefits.
Today, in the post-incentive era, a photovoltaic investment must primarily rely on its ability to pay for itself over time.
This occurs through two main factors:
- Self-consumption of the electricity generated, resulting in direct savings on the bill
- Payment for electricity fed into the grid (all energy not consumed on site).
A photovoltaic system generates savings by reducing the amount of electricity purchased from the grid and consequently lowering electricity costs.
How can your electricity bill be reduced?

In other words, by maximising self-consumption.
Therefore, self-consumption becomes the key factor for the correct sizing of a photovoltaic system.
To properly size a photovoltaic system, it is necessary to start from this question: “What is my energy consumption? And how much of it can be used during daylight hours, when the system is generating electricity?”
This simple question makes it possible to identify the most suitable system size for each individual case, based on the following assumptions:
– in Northern Italy, the average annual production is about 1,100 kWh per installed kW;
– in Central Italy, the average annual production is about 1,300 kWh per installed kW;
– in Southern Italy, the average annual production is about 1,500 kWh per installed kW;
Each kW installed on a pitched roof requires about 7-8 m2. Each kW installed on a flat roof required about 10-12 m2.
So the questions to be asked are: How much electricity do I consume annually? How much of that energy demand occurs during daylight hours?
If you live in Northern Italy and your average daytime electricity consumption is approximately 4,000 kWh per year (equivalent to around 10-12 kWh per day), the system size that will provide the best cost-benefit ratio would be: 3.6 kW, i.e. less than 30 m2 of pitched roof area.
If you live in Southern Italy and your average daytime electricity consumption is approximately 3,000 kWh per year (around 8 kWh per day), the system size that will provide the best cost-benefit ratio would be: 2 kWp, requiring approximately 15 m² of pitched roof area.
Naturally, the greater the proportion of electricity consumption that can be shifted to daytime hours, the greater the savings generated by the photovoltaic system. One way to increase daytime electricity consumption is to gradually replace traditional gas-powered appliances (boilers, cookers, heating systems, etc.) with electric alternatives that can make better use of the energy produced by the photovoltaic installation.
This approach can also reduce gas bills and allow for more effective sizing of the photovoltaic system.
It is impossible to provide a more detailed estimate without analysing the specific installation, as numerous variables can affect the sizing of a photovoltaic system.
